SEPTEMBER 2008

FROM PASTOR DARCY'S DESK: I remember my father at various times in my life summarizing in a sentence a feeling he was experiencing. With optimism in his heart, a twinkle in his eye and cheerfulness in his voice that can't be conveyed on paper, I remember him saying, "Things are looking up!" Well, as I write this I too am experiencing a feeling of optimism so I too say (or type <smile>), "Things are looking up!" here at St. John.

It's been a tough year for St. John as we have met, discussed, and voted on some major changes for our congregation — experimenting with a new schedule and doing some maintenance and renovation in our sanctuary. Though votes have moved us to make these changes, no doubt there are some that still struggle with these decisions. Though it is a great thing, even moving to weekly communion for all our services involves effort and transition.

Yet, even though there is work to be done and still some nervousness about it all, we move forward, trusting that the Lord has guided us and will continue to do so in the days, months, and years ahead. - "Things are looking up!"

In addition, I am encouraged that in the last year, two ministry teams have been formed, Evangelism & Hospitality and Fellowship, and are going strong. Fellowship right now has around 35 people involved in the circles that host fellowship time each Sunday morning, including a breakfast the first Sunday of each month.

I am encouraged that people signed up to use their gifts to teach and help at Vacation Bible School; there was no scrambling to find help. I am excited that VBS attendance doubled this year; we've reached more children with the Good News!

I am encouraged that Sunday school for 2008-09 was staffed this past spring with an abundance of teachers and no advertising. I am excited that we are taking risks and trying a new model of adult Christian education ("Connections" which involves small groups) to help all of us grow in faith. I am encouraged that people are using their gifts of leadership and planning, and ministry teams are in good shape. I am encouraged that we are on schedule and a Stewardship team is beginning in September. I could go on...

Yes, "Things are looking up! People are responding to Christ's call. But, there's still more to do in our ministry for the Lord. God has much more in store for us. I pray that as we enter this new time of the year, we may continue to serve and use our God-given gifts for the Lord, get involved, open our eyes to a greater vision, and allow God to continue to use us as instruments for helping others know about the love of God known through Christ Jesus.

God's Peace,
Pastor Darcy
